I suspect .htaccess is involved but cannot figure out how.

norbert Hi, I think that your hosting service ignores the included .htaccess file. In such a case it is the easiest to remove that file. The links will work then, but you won’t be able to have pretty URLs.

If you want to have pretty URLs, you will have to enable the usage of .htaccess files in your DigitalOcean droplet, since it is disabled in the default LAMP stack there.
