Cache not clearing?

Hi, After developing my site locally with cache disabled, I have uploaded to my live site and enabled caching. I do not think the caching is working as it should as all the files in the /cache/images folder have the same date as when uploaded?
There are a couple of odd things happening, like teaser text not showing up on some pages, and I want to purge the cache to see if that helps but I get an alert that the directory cannot be purged?
Any thoughts on the best way to check cache is working as it should?

grahamburt Hi, there are a couple of things to be understood when dealing with caching and transferring sites.

Images that are resized by templates are always cached since the resized copy has to be saved somewhere even though page caching is disabled.
As soon as an image is changed in any way, a new cached version is created while the old one is also kept. That is the intended behaviour. In case the cache grows too much in size, it can be purged. Therefore you will notice that some images will have very old dates after a while.
However, the most essential thing is to make sure that PHP has permissions to write to the cache directory and all its subdirectories. This is described as well in the getting started guide in detail. If that is not the case, your site won't work correctly because it is simply not allowed to do so. And note that it is always a good practice to move a site excluding the content of the cache directory.

So I think the only thing you have to do is to check the cache directory permissions. That should resolve your issues. 🙂

Hi, many thanks for your reply.

I think it is working properly now. I purged the previously cached files and the site would not load many images. I had set the cache folder permissions to 755 but this did not work, once changed to 777 all worked ok. But I am slightly concerned that one should not allow 777 permissions on folders? But they are only on this cache folder and enclosed so perhaps ok?

Do you have a thought on why the Text Teaser on 2 pages does not display? I have tried changing the template and checked all the template settings to see if I have done something different to all the other pages settings, and it does not even display the main text instead? I will try to add the page again from scratch to see if different. I wondered if it was a cache thing but it seems not.

The blog and gallery thumbnails at the bottom of the page do not have the text, whilst other do?
Blog page has main content, Gallery does not but both have Text / Teaser Text?

Its odd, but I think it is a template thing, I can get it to work if the text in the Main section is not using (just) Heading text.

grahamburt Hi, the permissions are really depending on your server and the way it uses PHP. It has not really anything to do with the CMS in use since every system will require write access at one point.

The behavior you describe concerning the main section and the teaser is described in the themes README as well as in the variable's tooltips. In short the Markdown variables serve only as fallbacks and to maintain compatibility to older versions. As soon a page contains any block, the Markdown variables are ignored. There is also no reason to use them. In case you need Markdown, you can use a Markdown block instead.
