Resizing and replacing images

Hi there and a Happy New Year!

First of all: Over the last days I tried Bludit, Grav and Typemill. All were either too feature-packed or too low on features. Automad is perfect, it has the right tools to quickly set up a personal site, blog or wiki. Thanks a lot for providing this for free!!!

Is there a way in the editor to swap an picture for another one? Sure, I can just overwrite it with the new one in the folder, but I'd like to know if there is a way to do this while writing your page.

Second It'd be super handy to be able to click on an image in the editor and change the width after it was inserted. Is that possible? Couldn't find it 😉

jgw Hi there! Happy new year! Unfortunately it is not possible at the moment to change an image in a block. But you can remove it and insert another one quickly. And you are right, replacing an image can only be done on the files tab.
Regarding resizing, you can specify the desired size before inserting it. But to change the size afterwards, you will have to re-insert it again. In case you use the Markdown editor, you can also resize an image by appending the desired size as a query string:

Yes, removing a pic and re-inserting it in-place works fine. I need to remember copying the caption before deletion, though 😉

At the moment I am not using the markdown editor, as the TOC doesn't seem to work when using only markdown-"fields" in the editor. At least for me it doesn't generate a table of contents when there is just a (properly formated) mardown section under it.
Which is a bit sad, because the files generated by the frontend are not really human-readable with all their formatting options in curly braces...

I'd love to use it though, as I "pre-write" all my stuff in VS code and markdown. But the TOC feature is such a nice thing to have for longer wiki articles!

Edit: Do you know why I can't just give one value for width or heigth? I thought Width= something px Height = auto is the absolute web standard to handle images?

jgw Hi! Since you’re writing your content in VS Code you can directly install and use the Markdown TOC extension in there.

The block editor provides all enhanced features for the UI, while the Markdown editor handles raw input as an alternative. That is also the reason for the different storage formats. Those things are not supposed to be mixed up and it doesn’t really make sense to manipulate blocks in a text editor — therefore Markdown exists.

Regarding resizing — what you say is true for CSS and you still have to define auto as the value for the height. The resizing here is very much different and also includes changing the aspect ratio. Image URLs can have other query strings as well and therefore it is important to have a well defined unique format to distinguish the image size from other parameters clearly. Also leaving out the height would require to specify the width as a parameter name — like in CSS.

I guess I'll need to accept the fixed image aspect ratios then.

Regarding the TOC: I used it in VS code but it didn't occur to me copying it over to Automad ☺The more you know...
